A video of two Kuki women being sexually abused by a mob of Meitei men seems to have prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence on the Manipur violence, which broke out on 3 May and has continued intermittently. Nandita Haksar, human rights advocate, feminist and an expert on Manipur and the northeast region of India, says in this interview with NewsClick that the PM hasn’t spoken out on the crisis in Manipur at all. All he has done is condemn violence against women, in general terms. She says there are three essential steps the government can take to resolve this crisis.
